About Everyday Digital Life

Smarter Tech. Safer Life. Less Stress.

Technology is supposed to make life easier. But sometimes, it feels like the opposite.

Your Wi-Fi slows down for no obvious reason. Your phone keeps asking you to change settings you don't understand. Another subscription quietly renews. And every week, there's a new AI tool, security warning, or expensive gadget promising to solve problems you didn't know you had.

Sound familiar?

That's why I started Everyday Digital Life.

I'm Michael Ellis, a technology writer and former IT support professional based in Raleigh, North Carolina. I help everyday people solve frustrating tech problems, stay safer online, make practical use of AI, and avoid spending money on technology they don't actually need.

No unnecessary jargon. No scare tactics. No pressure to buy the latest thing.

Just straightforward advice that makes technology a little easier to live with.

Hi, I'm Michael

I've spent years troubleshooting computers, networks, software, and the everyday technology problems that can turn a perfectly normal afternoon into a frustrating one.

My background is in IT technical support, where I learned something important: most people don't want to become technology experts. They just want their devices to work, their accounts to stay secure, and their problems to go away.

These days, I'm an independent technology writer and tester. I'm also a husband and father of two, which means technology problems don't stop when the workday ends.

At home, I'm the person figuring out why the Wi-Fi is slow upstairs, fixing a printer that suddenly refuses to cooperate, checking suspicious messages, and deciding whether an aging laptop needs an upgrade or simply a little maintenance.

I also keep an eye on our household's digital spending, because a few forgotten subscriptions can add up surprisingly quickly.

Those experiences shape what I write here.

I believe good technology advice should work in a real home, with real budgets, busy schedules, and people who have better things to do than troubleshoot devices all weekend.

What You'll Find Here

Everyday Digital Life focuses on four areas that affect how we use technology every day.

Fix It at Home

Practical troubleshooting guides for Wi-Fi, computers, smartphones, printers, smart-home devices, and other everyday tech headaches.

I'll walk you through what to check first, what you can safely fix yourself, and when replacing something actually makes sense.

Safer by Default

Online safety doesn't have to be complicated or frightening.

Here, you'll find clear advice on avoiding scams, protecting accounts, improving privacy, securing home networks, and keeping family devices safer without turning every setting into a research project.

AI That Earns Its Keep

AI can be genuinely useful, but not every impressive demo translates into something worth using.

I explore AI tools and everyday workflows that can save time, simplify tasks, or help you get organized. I also explain where these tools fall short, what they get wrong, and what information you should think twice about sharing.

Spend Less on Tech

Better technology doesn't always mean buying more technology.

From finding free software alternatives to reviewing subscriptions, comparing internet plans, and deciding whether to repair or replace a device, I focus on helping you get more value from what you already have.

How I Approach Technology Advice

I try to keep a few simple principles at the center of everything I publish.

Start with the simplest fix. Before recommending a new device, paid app, or complicated solution, I look for something you can try with what you already own.

Focus on real-world usefulness. Specifications and marketing claims matter less than whether something works reliably in everyday situations.

Be clear about costs. A low purchase price doesn't always mean a good deal, especially when subscriptions, accessories, repairs, and ongoing fees are involved.

Take privacy and security seriously, without creating panic. You deserve to understand the risks and the practical steps that make a meaningful difference.

Be honest about limitations. No device, app, or AI tool is perfect. When something has drawbacks, I'll explain them.

Respect your time. You shouldn't need a technical background or an entire afternoon to understand a straightforward recommendation.

My goal is to help you make confident decisions, not overwhelm you with options.

A Note About Recommendations

My recommendations are guided by usefulness, reliability, privacy, ease of use, and overall value.

When I review a product or service, I aim to distinguish between hands-on experience, research, and information provided by manufacturers or other sources.

I won't suggest that something has been personally tested unless it actually has.

If the website uses affiliate links or sponsored content, those relationships will be clearly disclosed. Recommendations should be based on what makes sense for readers, not simply what costs the most.

Sometimes the best recommendation is to keep what you already have, choose a free alternative, or skip a purchase entirely.

Let's Make Technology Less Complicated

You don't need to understand every technical detail to make smart decisions about the technology in your life.

You just need clear information, practical steps, and someone willing to explain what matters.

That's what I hope you'll find at Everyday Digital Life.

Whether you're trying to fix a stubborn Wi-Fi connection, protect your family from online scams, figure out whether an AI tool is worth using, or trim your monthly technology bills, I'm glad you're here.

Making everyday tech simple, safe, and affordable.
